Christian Lezzer, Boston College Defensive Back Retires After 5th Concussion
Christian Lezzer, former Boston College defensive back, talks about his decision to retire from football after suffering his 5th concussion. Christian and I both talk about how we played through concussions during our football careers and how these decisions ultimately cut our careers short. Christian wants young athletes to know that they wont be letting anyone down by sitting out for a concussion. This episode shows how easy concussions can be hidden by athletes. I hope listeners can learn from the outcomes of our decisions to play with concussions.
We both mentioned that we don't have any regrets from our football careers and I would never want to scare anyone from playing football. Some of my best memories come from playing the game and I would do it all over again if I could. The only thing I would do differently is tell someone that my head hurt.
I want to commend Christian on his courage and maturity to step away from the game he loves in the best interest of his long-term health. I also want to wish him luck in pursuit of his new goals, which are to play for the Boston College baseball team and go to graduate school. Look for a follow-up interview a year from now. Hopefully, we will be talking about home runs and web-gems.
